History of
Winsor & Newton

Winsor & Newton has always been core to the world of art materials. They proudly maintain the pledge of manufacturing "The World's Finest Artist's Materials".

This is as true now as it was when the company was founded in 1832, and they take their relationship with the artist very seriously.

Winsor & Newton have built their reuptation on the quality and reliability of their products, combined with continual product development, improvement and innovation. However, while keeping true to the principles laid down by William Winsor and Henry Newton in the 1800's they actively embrace new ideas, new technologies and search the world for the best raw materials available.

Winsor & Newton's highest professional quality, traditional oil colour made from the finest pigments. Gordon Harris stock 120 colours in this range, offering the widest spectrum of all the Winsor & Newton oil ranges. 117 colours are available at Gordon Harris, in 37ml tubes, as well as two white colours in both the 60ml and 120ml sizes.

Artisan Water Mixable Oil Colour has been specifically developed to appear and work just like conventional oil colour. The key difference between Artisan and conventional oils is its ability to thin and clean up with water. The Artisan range consists of 40 colours. Colours available in 37ml, 120ml, as well as several 200ml tubes.

Griffin Fast Drying Oil Colour offers the excellent advantage of faster drying times compared to traditional oil colours. This means that the traditional oil techniques of both impasto and glazing can be done in considerably less time and a painting can be completed in a single session. The full range of 50 colours are ideal for working outdoors, and greater transparency means increased depth and clarity for glazes. Colours available in 37ml tubes, Titan White also available in 120ml and 200ml sizes.

Artists Oilbar is an artists' quality oil colour in stick form, enabling you to paint and draw freely and directly onto your surface. It is a unique medium because it provides the artist with the buttery consistency and richness of oil colour together with the freedom and directness of pastels or charcoal. Oil bar is fundamentally different from oil pastels or oil crayons due to its unique formulation. Each of the 35 colours in the range are produced by combining artists' quality pigments with linseed oil, into which are blended specially selected waxes. Oilbar sticks are available in a 50ml size at Gordon Harris.

Artists' Acrylic Colour (Finity)

Artists' Acrylic Colour is Winsor & Newton's finest quality acrylic range. Artists' Acrylic has a wide spectrum of 74 colours which offers an exceptional brilliance and intensity of colour due to maximum pigment strength. Colours available in 60ml tubes, Titanium White also available in 200ml size.

Galeria Acrylic Colour is a high quality acrylic which delivers professional results and is ideal for artists who want good quality colour at an affordable price. All of the 60 colours in the Galeria Acrylic range offer a wide spectrum of pigment characteristics to choose from, as well as excellent brilliance of colour, high levels of pigment strength, opacity & permanence, strong brush stroke retention, clean colour and a smooth, satin finish. 50 colours available at Gordon Harris in 60ml tubes.

Artists' Water Colour

Artists' Water Colour is formulated and manufactured to create an unparalleled water colour range which offers artists' the widest and most balanced choice of pigments with the greatest possible permanence. Each of the 96 colours have been selected and formulated to offer the greatest choice so that artists can use a unique palette that best suits their work. All colours available in 5ml tubes.

Cotman Water Colour are a range of water colours that are made to normal high quality standards but costs are kept to an economical level by replacing some of the more costly pigments with less expensive alternatives. The range consists of 40 colours in tubes and pans which possess good transparency, excellent tinting strength and good working properties. There are also a number of excellent water colour sets available in the Cotman range. All colours available at Gordon Harris in 8ml and 21ml tubes.

Winsor & Newton has relaunched Designers Gouache. The range now includes 17 New Colours and 26 other colours have been modified improving lightfastness, brightness and more single pigment colours. Designers Gouache colours are a range of opaque water colours, mainly used by designers, illustrators and commercial artists to create vibrant illustrations in solid colour. Gouache is also widely used in fine art as an opaque water colour. Today the Designers Gouache range benefits from significant developments in technology and is smoother, flatter, more opaque and more brilliant than ever before.

The inks are formulated from a series of soluble dyes in a superior shellac solution.  These inks can be applied with brush, dip pen or airbrush and are widely used by designers, calligraphers and artists as well as illustrators. The full range of 26 Drawing Ink colours are available in 14ml bottles, each with their own uniquely designed box.  Blacks, Gold and Silver are available in 30ml bottles.  Black Indian Ink (the 'spider' design) is available in 30ml with a dropper lid.

Winsor & Newton Calligraphy Inks offer the widest colour range available for use with a Dip pen or Fountain pen. The range consists of 18 colours, 14 vibrant colours covering the colour spectrum and 4 extra colours - Matt Black, White, Gold and Silver.  All colours are available in 30ml bottles.
