CRETACOLOR is a brand with deep roots in European pencil making, combining the legacy of industrial pioneer Carl Brevillier with the vision of modern innovator Hans Wolfgang Hromatka. In 1863, Brevillier founded the Zeus pencil factory in Vienna with the goal of producing high-quality writing and drawing tools that were accessible to a wider audience. At a time when most pencils and nibs were handmade, expensive, and inconsistent in quality, Brevillier helped make reliable art and writing materials more widely available.
More than a century later, in the late 1990s, Hans Wolfgang Hromatka revived and expanded this tradition under the CRETACOLOR name. After acquiring the Hirm pencil factory in 1996 and later Brevillier-Urban in 2008, he combined historic expertise with modern production, creating Brevillier Urban & Sachs and establishing CRETACOLOR as one of the world’s leading premium brands for artists’ drawing materials. Today, CRETACOLOR continues this legacy by producing high-quality pencils, charcoals and drawing tools trusted by artists around the world.
