Schmincke

Schmincke has been dedicated to producing the finest artist colours for more than 140 years. Founded in 1881 by colour chemists Josef Horadam and Hermann Schmincke, the company began after discovering the traditional resin-oil paint formulations of art professor Cesare Mussini in Florence. These unique paints, inspired by the techniques of the Old Masters, became the foundation for Schmincke’s first product line, Mussini resin-oil colours. Soon after, Josef Horadam developed the renowned Horadam watercolours, establishing a legacy of innovation and craftsmanship that continues today.

Over generations, Schmincke expanded its range to include professional oil colours such as NORMA Professional, soft pastels, gouache, acrylics, and more—always with a focus on exceptional quality for artists. Now recognised worldwide, Schmincke remains committed to its founding motto, Meliora Cogito (“I strive for the best”), continuing to create premium artist materials that help artists bring their creativity to life.
