da Vinci
Da Vinci brushes have been crafted in Nuremberg, Germany since the late 19th century, continuing a long tradition of precision brushmaking in the region. The company’s modern story began with the Fritz Defet brush factory, which was taken over in 1945 by 18-year-old Hansfried Defet after World War II. Together with his mother, he rebuilt the business from the ground up despite scarce materials and challenging conditions.
Encouraged by his wife Marianne, the company focused on producing the highest-quality artist brushes, with the goal of becoming a global leader in fine brushmaking. In 1952 the name Leonardo da Vinci was registered as the company’s trademark, inspired by the Renaissance master and reflecting the brand’s commitment to artistry, innovation and craftsmanship. Today, Da Vinci brushes are recognised worldwide for their exceptional quality and precision, combining traditional handcraftsmanship with modern manufacturing to create tools trusted by artists across many disciplines.
