The hot item at our Oil Painting Demos last year! Customers attending couldn’t believe their eyes at the difference in colour brilliance and amount of paint used on a canvas where one side was prepared with Schmincke Primer and the other side wasn’t. Why?

Because correct priming is the singularly most important part of oilpainting. Schmincke Primer is a half-chalk, flexible ground with the perfect degree of absorbency for oils. Schmincke Primer also fills the weave quickly, leaves less brush strokes than acrylic gesso, and is more easily sanded. Most importantly, its silky smooth, soft white, plaster finish provides the ideal surface for manipulating oilcolour and making your colour sing!

A white, lightfast and resistant primer with an absorbant character.
Its absorbancy can be reduced by adding Schmincke Size, or acrylic colours can be added to colour the primer.
Thin the primer with water (10-30%) and brush 3-4 coats onto painting ground.
Can be painted over with acrylic or oil colours after drying.

ABOUT SCHMINCKE
Schmincke began at the end of the 19th Century, when the colour chemists Josef Horadam and Hermann Schmincke saw an opportunity to provide the artists of the day with a truly superior artists oil, and so set out to Italy where traditional studio painting was still taught, in search of the nearly forgotten resin oil formulations.
In 1881, at the Academy of Fine Art in Florence, they secured the precision formulations of the Professor Cesare Mussini, a guardian of the old masters techniques, and on these formulations, the two founded their manufacturing establishment under the name H.Schmincke and Co.

In subsequent years, artists’ colours to suit all techniques were introduced, such as Josef Horadam’s patent watercolours of 1892. Through the entire 20th century, every generation of owner has lead the company to its current position as one of the worlds leading manufacturers of finest artists’ colour.
