Gustav Klimt is one of the best known artists of the Viennese Secession and the Art Nouveau movement. Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I is part of the artist's ground-breaking Golden Phase. Inspired by Byzantine mosaics, the painting is layered with gold and silver leaf, and embellished with a textured gesso relief of elaborate geometric patterns. Klimt's work was crucial in the evolution of art from the nineteenth century to the twentieth, and his influence on illustration was momentous. Throughout the second half of the twentieth century, his work became particularly appreciated and, by the early twenty-first century, his paintings, drawings and prints commanded some of the highest prices ever recorded for individual works of art.
